| DVD REVIEWS : SPUN AND HOMEGROWN

These two movies are for most of us who haven't entered into the very pervasive world of illicit drugs in our country. The "war on drugs" is definitely one war we are losing.
For instance, in New Orleans, a year after Katrina, the only thing working consistently is the drug trade according to reports.
We have no idea, in our country, what an enormous subculture this is. So, what do us "normal" people know about drugs? Not much. About the only thing we can do is educate ourselves through TV and the movies.
Spun, the movie, is good example of the drug subculture; it is an unbelievable movie, almost a comedy. A group of bungling "speed" freaks dealing with the ne'r-do-wells world of methaphetamines (speed, sometimes called, crank)
The addict, Ross(Jason Schwarzman) is a college drop-out "all strung out" as practically all the characters in the movie. The craziest of all the characters is Spider Mike(John Leguizamo) who sort of steals the show.
There's very little story other than how "crank" or "speed" takes over their lives. Schwarzman seems made for this movie like he did in Shopgirl. However, in Shopgirl, he pulled himself together. In this movie, he is, like all of them, lost. Sad but educational. Check it out. 2 parachute.
Homegrown is another movie in the same genre, but less depressing and raw. The movie is actually billed as a comedy.
Homegrown is basically about "pot"-how it's grown, who buys it, and the enormity of the marijuana culture. For instance, in California, there are a couple of spots where the "pot" plants are multiplying faster than insurgents in Iraq and that is fast. It is one ofCalifornia's cash crop.
Homegrown staring Billy Bob Thorton and a cast of characters including Ryan Philippe and John Bon Jovi is an interesting movie and fairly informative. Ryan Philippe is a good actor. Bon Jovi does a credible job during his brief appearance. A two parachute movie.
