E-Ring is a new TV program about the decision-making process at the Pentagon. Talk about a fairy tale! The Pentagon would be much better if it were a TV program, trust me. The fact that the Pentagon is the world's most confusing building and only a small portion of it is the E-Ring speaks volumes. Translate this to the decisions that often come out of there and we see the actual building reflected-one of confusion and disinformation and one that must have been designed by Mad Magazine's Alfred E. Newman on a bad day.

I've literally been lost inside the Pentagon for an hour attempting to find an office or a conference room. There are those who have gone in and never come out. The only thing that ever made sense to me about the Pentagon was the cafeteria where the generals were forced to carry their own trays.

The TV show, E-Ring, stars former Law and Order actor and Julia Roberts man, Benjamin Bratt, and Easy Rider star, Dennis Hopper. Talk about making me smile. Hopper stars as the colonel and has played enough crazies that he seems to be right at home. And, I might add, Hopper does a good job. He is just over the top enough to make his character appear plausible. But, the show and Hopper's character are about as improbable as Rumsfeld admitting he's ever been wrong.

Implausible to the max. Get this: military decisions are made and solved on world problems within an hour. You have got to smile. If only it were so. What it reminds me of is a book I wrote once. I thought it was great, but nobody else did apparently. It was about the debacle in the desert when we were attempting to mount a rescue mission to free the Iranian hostages. The actual mission turned out to be Murphy's Law: If it can happen, it will. My book had the mission succeeding.

This is E-Ring; The missions succeed and there are heroes. Watch it! Maybe it would be good for us as a country to think in terms of turning the impossible into possibilities. In a sense, that is what we are attempting to do in Iraq and it ain't working. Maybe Ben and Dennis could turn Iraq around. Why not? It is as good a plan as we have now. E-ring is on Wednesdays at 8:00pm on NBC.
