DVD Review: Loggerheads

Loggerheads
Where has this movie been? Loggerheads is a very good, pensive movie. The setting is 1999 in Kure Beach, North Carolina. Loggerheads are turtles found along the North Carolina coast.

The movie is a story of how Southern families deal with homosexuality and AIDS in the community and the nuances of the South.

Mark is a gay, lonely, pensive guy who is looking out for the Loggerhead turtles. See the symbolism? He's in a little Southern beach town, Kure, that is still mired in the fifties where tolerance is not the order of the day.

Much of the movie is about denial. The adoptive parents of Mark, one a minister, denies who Mark is; the community denies it; the birth mother, a young teenager, now a women, who gave away her baby (Mark) at birth is haunted by her decision( or rather her Mother's decision) and is also in denial. Isn't everybody?

Loggerheads, is much like the academy award winning movie,Crash; both movies are thought-provoking and deal with the subject matter of intolerance: one deals with race and the other deals with homosexuality.

What strikes me as so amazing about the movie are the obvious religious overtones. The South, is a region of the country where religious tradition is as much a part of the fabric as breathing . Many folks in the South(not all), however , follow a basic fundamental teaching of Jesus which emphasizes intolerance as opposed to the beliefs of others. Even the casual believer, would know that Jesus' very first emotion is one of openness and acceptance.

I am often amazed and have a hard time "getting" how intolerance trumps love constantly. Maybe it is because at its base, AIDs is related to sex and this is like the forbidden fruit; but, in reality, a person's sexual orientation is not about sex but love.

I know, not everyone believes the same way I do. Oh well...rent this DVD. Three parachutes. Marjorie O'Keefe
