Last Week's TidBits: Kudos Brian Williams- More Pat-Where's the Money?
News anchor Brian Williams in Los Angeles, January 21, 2005. More than a year after he took over the anchor chair and with more than nine months without permanent competition from either rival, 'NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams' closes out the year with a quarterly win among evening newscasts. I'm flipping through the TV the other night and saw three things worth thinking about. First I saw Brian Williams anchoring the NBC Nightly News signing off saying something like, "We get lots of letters and emails about our news coverage and we read them all because they are feedback. Lately we've gotten lots of letters about our Katrina coverage. He read a couple.

Then he said something like, "We understand your feelings, but Katrina was different, it devastated a great American icon, New Orleans and the Gulf coast and permanently displaced thousands of people. We were there and we were also in the Super Dome when Americans were desperate and our government could not deliver. And, we have seen a segment of our society exposed that we hardly knew existed. So, we are going to keep on covering Katrina. Thank you for your comments." It was humorous and made me proud of him as I am usually so skeptical of the media.

Next, flipping the channel, I saw Pat Robertson on the 700 club doing a pledge drive. I mean, this is the same Pat Robertson who called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and said God was punishing Israeli's Sharon with a massive stroke for dividing Palestine. He is a certifiable nut!!!

Robertson was reading off the pledges: five thousand from here, ten thousand from there; five thousand from Fresno, CA., the poorest community in California. Who are these people who would give this guy money? Now, that is something to think about! God bless America, what a country.

Flipping the channel again, I discover the money allocated for rebuilding Iraq is disappearing like the morning fog in San Francisco. They have it in footlockers, tucked away in desk drawers, etc. No one knows where it is. A soldier was given cash to go to another country on a mission and he gambled it away. They can't slap his hands because nobody even knows how much they gave him.

And, then there's the guy who was refurbishing a swimming pool and finally ended up only polishing some brass. Why not, he got certified that he had done the pool job. It would appear that those in Iraq in charge of reconstruction could screw up a two car funeral possession. Got to love it. kt
