The Lesser Among Us
On occasion, I see a group of mentally challenged kids hanging out at my favorite coffee shop. They take up about half the space and most of the time just sit and sleep. They are severely challenged, I think.
One day I’m getting coffee and they come in with their caretaker. They sit around for an hour or so; I’m playing on my iPhone. They leave; and, as I head out, I see the proprietor cleaning up.
It dawns on me that they never spend any money in the shop.
This day the owner expresses his displeasure that they leave the bathroom in a mess. He is not cruel, he's just stating fact. I calculate that the group would spend maybe $20 each time they come in, so I slip a donation in the tip jar on their behalf. I like this idea.
