Regardless of Fame or Fortune....
Jerks Should Not Be Tolerated
Clayton JonesOctober 29 2011
The reading public always fascinates me. I guess it is the celeb mentality. There are those who will read anything by a celebrity. The Steve Jobs book is already over the moon in sales. After watching the “Sixty Minutes” interview with biographer, Walter Isaacson, why would anybody want to read it. Well, maybe they didn’t watch the interview and in terms of full disclosure, I’m not a Mac, type but I am an iPhone user so I guess I have to thank Jobs—I could probably do as well with an Android, but I like the iPhone better. Plus, as a Southern boy who has a weird sense of morality, why in the f____ would we want to read about a genius marketing guy who was an asshole.
According to Isaacson, Jobs insulted waitresses, was disloyal, i. e., didn’t look after the people who helped him get to the top and, get this, intentionally parked in handicapped parking spaces. I know. I know. My Mom would be big-time irritated with me for violating a basic Southern tenet, “Never speak ill of the dead.” Sorry Mom. I did immediately tell my wife, “When I hit the road, do not allow anyone to write anything about me.” I guess you might say, “I will not be reading Job’s bio.”
We need to acknowledge his genius, but give me a break. Do I think for a minute that had he not invented very successful products, nobody would have ? Please! Someone else would have come along. And, I don’t for a moment think that his genius did it without the help of others whether he acknowledged them or not. I don’t want this to come across as sour grapes, as I feel like the cowboy, Woodrow Call, in the mini-series “Lonesome Dove” of several years back. An Army Scout beat up on one of Call’s young cowboys. In turn, “Call” beat the Army Scout mercilessly. When he was through, he turned to the onlookers and said, “I hate rude behavior and won’t tolerate it.” Thats me! There’s never any excuse to be a jerk. And, as a person of faith, regardless of successes in this life, the sort of accolades we are giving Jobs doesn’t count for s___t in the next life.
