   {Proof}: THE DVD
taxi driver dvd jacket
Proof
Proof. Catherine(Gwyneth Paltrow) is a devoted daughter, who nurses her Dad, Robert(Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant mathematician whose genius is crippled by mental illness.

Robert's former student, Hal(Jake Gyllenhaal) searches through a deceased Robert's notebooks and discovers a "proof" of a mathematical puzzle that many other brillant mathematicians have not been able to solve.

Both Hal and Catherine think Robert completed the proof during one of his more rational periods.(See the dvd, we don't want to spoil it.)

This movie is very thoughtful on so many levels. Catherine withdraws from life for several years to take care of her dad, Robert.

After Robert's death, Claire(Hope Davis), Catherine's super organized sister comes home to take care of the house and other matters and wants Catherine to move back with her to New York City and get back in the main stream of life. Claire loves her sister, but in many ways she compounds Catherine's fears that she has inherited her father's mental illness. Then there is also the relationship between Hal and Catherine. Does Hal like her, want to help her, or does he just want a relationship because Catherine is Robert's daughter?

Proof is very much like A Beautiful Mind because it deals with mental illness. Gwyneth Paltrow is very good as Catherine. Jake Gyllenhaal appears a little lost as Hal. I like Jake, especially in Jarhead, but in reality, he always plays himself, somewhat like Jack Nicholson. Anthony Hopkins is OK, but I often think he is miscast like in the movie, The World's Fastest Indian(World's Fastest Indian is aboutt a New Zealander who comes to America for a journey on his Indian scout motorcycle). I kept thinking who in the world would cast Anthony Hopkins in such a role as Burt Munro, a motorcycle enthusiast and rider. What the viewer always has to think, I guess, is that the casting people know something we don't.

A good DVD. See it, two parachutes.
