In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Middle Eastern Affairs at the State Department said about the war in Iraq: "We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq."
Now, I don't mind some American saying this, but not some guy on our government payroll. It is a little like family talking about each other in public. We don't mind the criticism, but we don't want an American government official badmouthing his own government especially on the Arab network Al-Jazerra. Condi should fire this dude already. Apparently, this is not the first time Fernandez has done this on Al-Jazeera.
Tuesday, Juan Williams of NPR interviewed Vice President Cheney and the VP admitted that the violence in Iraq is a big problem and it would be a long time before Iraqi Forces could take over. In mid-2005, the Vice President said "the insurgency was in the last throes."
And, I love this. (Keep in mind Prime Minister al-Maliki consults with anti-American cleric Al Sadr and it is thought that Al-Sadr keeps the Prime Minister in power.)
The Americans and Iraqi forces staged a raid in Sadr City, Iraq . The Prime Minister announced that he did not authorize the raid and it would not happen again. Last week, the US captured the leader of a death squad who was part of Al-Sadr's militia and the Prime Minister ordered the US to release him. This is what our troops are facing.
The best comments I've heard about Iraq thus far has to be from some former ambassador recently interviewed on the partitioning of Iraq.
He says it has already happened. The Kurds have their own army, fly their own flag, and will not allow the Iraqi Army inside their country. The Shiites already have their own country staked out which will eventually be like the clergy driven society of Iran. The only wild card is the Sunnis and the jury is still out.
The telling thing had to do with our role which is negligible at best; we can have no effect. So...where is our exit plan? KT
