Most of us were stunned with the senseless shooting of the five little Amish girls in Pennsylvania on October 5th by an absolute lunatic(Gunman Kills Five in Pennsylvania School).
The first reaction was somebody should kill him, but he had already killed himself. How does something like this happen? Well, there's no rhyme or reason how or why it happens. The perpetrator was crazy; he was hearing voices and living in a world that most of us don't inhabit; and, he was doing it surrounded by guns. Senseless.
About this time by coincidence, I had rented the dvd, Taxi Driver starring Robert DeNiro. If you don't already know, in the movie, DeNiro plays Travis Bickle who is alienated and psychotic. Bickle drives a cab by night in New York City and spends his days alone in his room or in a porno movie theater.
On one of his runs, he spies Cybil Shepard who plays Betsy and it's love at first sight. She is an angel, he thinks, but he doesn't know how to be in a relationship. Finally, Bickle gets a date with Betsy and takes her to a porno movie. She recognizes he's a crazy.
Preposterous in a way, but Betsy is working for a political campaign and somehow it all fits. Maybe because in his own way, Travis is no crazier than the politicians she's around. She basicaly escapes "none worse for the wear".
Travis sees a 12 year old prostitute named Iris, played by Jodie Foster. He, in his deranged mind, becomes a homicidal vigilante, morally offended by seeing Iris used by the merciless men. He decides to rescue Iris and kills several in the process. Did I mention that Travis is an ex-Marine, Vietnam vet?
One of those killed is a mobster-a good riddance sort of thing. In all of this, in a weird way, Travis becomes somewhat of a hero. Iris returns to her parents and they are ever grateful to Travis.
OK, how does this relate to the tragic death of the Amish youngsters? It doesn't other than the movies always have the capacity to make things come out OK where in real life, it is not so easy. No way can we make the deaths of these little Amish children OK. God bless them and their families.
