| Plight Of The 172th Stryker Brigade

Nothing is too good for the soldier and that is what he gets, NOTHING.
Want an example?
Last July, the 172th Stryker Brigade, from Fort Wainwright, Alaska had finished their twelve month tour in Iraq and were literally getting on the plane when they were taken off the plane and told their tour was extended 120 days. Talk about chaos!
Newsweek did an article on them and it almost made me cry. The families were anticipating their arrival, made arrangements for the children to get out of school, and many of soldiers had already shipped their clothes and possessions home- sad beyond means.
We ex-military types understand the sacrifices that families make. Who is to blame? Who do you think? The planners at the Pentagon who make those decisions, of course.
One of the stories in Newsweek, was in reference to Rumsfeld's meeting with some of the family members of the 172th at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

| One wife asked him why the 172th was spending most of its time clearing houses in the nasty streets of Baghdad instead of patrolling the streets in the relative safety of their armored vehicles. She zapped him by saying "My husband hasn't set foot in his Stryker(lightweight armored vehicle) since they arrived in Baghdad."
Rumsfeld responded to the wife by saying 95 percent of the house clearings are being handled by the Iraqis, not the Americans; the women in the audience began shouting "NO." He was "flummoxed" according to the article. My language would have been: "He didn't know where to shit or go blind."
The 172th soldiers say they are doing 95% of the searches. Rumfeld should have talked to the guy they quoted, an NCO, on his second tour. "I'd like to punch Rumsfeld in the gut. He treats us like we're not human. He acts like he's not destroying families."
Last week, the fourth member of the 172th Stryker Brigade(Sergeant Jonathan Rojas) was killed since their tour was extended 120 days last July.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (From Alaska) announced last week that she received word from Army officials that the 4,000 member combat team's tour will not be extended again and said they should be home by mid- December. We can only hope so.
God Bless the members of the 172th Stryker Brigade combat team and their families.
