An Unfinished Life
An Unfinished Life is one of those movies that slips under the radar. It has two of the best actors on the face of the earth, Morgan Freeman and Robert Redford-well, at least in the top five. And, Jennifer Lopez is no slouch.

So, what is the problem with this movie? I guess Lopez can't be taken serious because the critics or whoever can't fathom a pop diva being a good actor. I've never seen her in a bad role, even if the movie was sorry. But, I am baffled at why this one didn't make more of a splash. The movie had great actors and a good story, even if slightly predictable, but aren't they all.

To flee an abusive boyfriend, Jean Gilkyson (Jennifer Lopez) moves herself and her daughter, Griff, into the Wyoming home of her estranged father-in-law, Einar Gilkyson (Robert Redford). The granddaughter of whom he knew nothing absolutely steels scene after screen. Giff is wise beyond her years and, obviously, single mother Lopez has done a good job; the kid even says "Yes Sir." What is this?

Steely rancher and reformed drunk, Einar, is nursing his sidekick Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman), who was mauled by a bear. Einar can't get over the death of his only son from a car accident and blames Jean who struggles to make sense of her new life.

Now, this is the good part. For those of us who get our aggression out vicariously through the movies, this is absolutely the best. How many times have you seen an abusive man or child predator on TV and wanted to kill him or at least beat him senseless. Well, this movie is your chance. Einar, an older guy, who is still quite the "man" takes care of two ruffian male chauvinists in quick order. He saves his best for the Jean's abusive former boyfriend who comes looking for her. You will love it.

And, there's more about the bear. I'll save that for the DVD, it's worth it. Here's the predictable part and hard to kick: Over time, Einar and Jennifer move through their grief and that ain't bad.
