Tammy Faye has gone on to her just rewards. I'm a little sad. I saw the documentary,
The Eyes of Tammy Faye, done by two gay guys. Very interesting and I think I might watch it again. The highlight of the movie for me was the mutual respect shown between the filmmakers and their subject.
Mrs. Tammy has lived quite a life. Most of us got to know her when she and her former husband, Jim Baker, were ripping off the faithful seeking funds for the PTL Club and Heritage USA. All of us know that story and the downfall. When it happened, I had mixed feeling.
Although I was never a fan, I was constantly asking questions like: How could people be so stupid as to be taken in by these two? But, to be fair, I was constantly asking that of all the televangelists, whether they promised riches or keys to the kingdom.
I always thought that Jim and Tammy Faye were kind of naive with a simple message that made people want to believe. And, then there was Jim's near tryst with a not so quite innocent believer, Jessica Hahn. He didn't quite seem to know how to pull that off and there was always a question of whether they got it on or not. Maybe there was a little disillusionment in Jessica's story, but it didn't keep her from having breast augmentation.
And, let's face it, Jessica made out financially OK.
Remarkably, Tammy Faye and even Jim, after a little prison time, went on to rebuild their lives somewhat. So, as often happens in our culture, the famous become infamous.
Larry King announced Tammy's departure on his show. She had promised him "dibs" on her passing. The last time she was on his show, she said she was going straight to heaven once it was time. Tammy, I don't doubt that, but since nobody knows quite how heaven works, I can't believe that you're not going to have to wait a bit-straight I would think refers to those like Mother Teresa and others who probably never concerned themselves with the Larry King show. DVD Review: Love Song for Bobby Long
John Travolta plays Bobby Long, a former professor. Lawson is Bobby's friend
and assistent. Scarlet Johansson plays Pursy. A good story about friendship, family, and understanding.
Quote from Love Song for Bobby Long--- Lawson Pines: New Orleans is a siren of a city. A place of fables and illusion. A place Lorraine(Pursy's mother) had to escape from and Bobby and I had to escape to. Away from Alabama, away from lives that no longer belong to us.

One problem in our culture today is that Americans don't have a shared experience.
There was a time when you could go into any bar or Church and say, "When I was in the Army..." (Navy, whatever) and there would be instant rapport.
Most of the reaction to these stories was positive and vets love to tell about their experiences. Today, few Americans have military experience and this is sad.
Here's a posting of exactly what I mean: 30 years ago today was my first day of Navy boot camp...time flies. I remember in August of 1977 while in boot camp my company commander (Freed was his name...never smiled-he was gung-ho), walked into our barrack and the only thing he said was "the King is dead" and walked out. We all kind of looked at each other dumbfounded...found out later it was Elvis Presley....we got a big laugh out of it!!!!WA
I don't think we will be hearing many of the stories like the one above 30 years from now.

Movie Review: Rescue Dawn
Dieter Dengler's main goal in life was to be a fighter pilot. He goes to Vietnam and carries out this goal. He goes on a mission, gets shot down, and captured. Rescue Dawn is the story of his struggle to escape.
Great Quote from Rescue Dawn- Dengler: When I was uhh... five or somethin', I was looking out the window, with my brother... and we see this fighter plane was coming right at us. I was not scared. I was mesmerized! Because for me, this pilot was this all-mighty being from the clouds. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be him. I wanted to be one of them. I wanted to be a pilot.
