DVD Review: Frisbee: The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher

frisbee-lonnie

Lonnie Frisbee is a kind of strange documentary, not so much in the subject matter, rather in the fact that it was on PBS(will be shown again in august).

I kept wondering why. Frisbee (more on Frisbee) is credited with being the real inspiration behind two of the big evangelical church movements-Calvary Chapel and Vineyard.

Lonnie Frisbee was just a young guy in the late 1960's and 1970's who had a vision and became a part of the Jesus movement. Wherever he was, according to the documentary, miracles happened.

I was mesmerized. My thoughts were: did this really happen? If so, why to this guy?

In the documentary, we see Frisbee deteriorate. He starts as this innocent believer and then as he gets into organized religion, he loses charisma. He has some gay experiences or at least the accusation. Or, then maybe it was all an LSD trip. His life ends tragically.

    Movie Review: Paris, je t'aime

paris je t'aime dvd jacket

Paris, je t'aime is an enjoyable movie. It's a series of 18 vignettes set in Paris.

In some ways, it could be an ad campaign for the Paris tourist bureau. Several familiar stars including Gena Rowlands and Nick Nolte had roles in the movie.

All the vignettes(some in English, some subtitled) are very short, but hit close to two hours. There is Not a bad one in the lot and a few of them have some very redeeming aspects. In one, a husband mets his wife at a restaurant to end their long-term marriage. He has met a younger woman; he and his wife have grown apart. The wife arrives for the dinner and announces that she is terminally ill with cancer. The husband is overwhelmed, breaks it off with his lover, and steps up to the plate to look after his wife until she dies in his arms. The moral is: pretend you are in love and it will happen. In this case, fall in love all over again. Sweet vignette.

The French subtitles aren't cumbersome in the movie, like say, Volver, where the pace of the Spanish seems to slow the pace of the movie.

Go see Paris, Je T' Aime. Two parachutes. On West and East Coast.

    Movie Review: Once
musician guy and musician girl walking
Once Movie

Once is a cute and sweet movie. Mostly Once is a movie about music. I liked the music and am going to order the album.

Once is about a street singer,Guy, in Dublin. A girl(Czech immigrant) walks by and becomes interested in his music and starts asking questions. She's a very talented musician herself and she and our hero, Guy, become friends and make music together. (However, not the euphemism of making music together, literally they made music together.)

The girl invites Guy into her home to meet her young daughter and widowed mother. She also has a husband back in the old country; so, as she and Guy grow closer in friendship, she is careful not to let things go too far.

Guy and Girl(character listed as just Girl in credits) get an unlikely bank loan to cut a record. (Cute scene with the bank manager who is a "wanna bet" musician.)

Once is a movie that holds you. My wife would like it because it has no violence, and very little foul language.

The movie ends with the perception that "somehow it ends only as it can." There's no tying up loose ends in a nice neat bow but there's no "feel bad" ending.

Engaging in contemplation as I often do... I wish I had musical talent. What a wonderful gift!

Two and a half parachutes.

I saw Once on the West Coast. It might not be in wide release on the East Coast yet, but put it on your list of movies to see.
