What To Do About Korea

South Korea, the ROK (Republic of Korea),has the best ground Army in the world. As far as the basics are concerned, there simply is none better.

When I was in Korea last, I watched their training exercises. In snow, the South Korean soldiers were required to walk long distances to make them tougher.

So, why is a Division of 25,000 (men/women) American soldiers on the front lines at the demilitarized zone? Good question.

Here is a familiar scenario often talked about: If the North Koreans were to invade in massive numbers, which they would, the American Division would be decimated thus bringing the United States into war. Maybe this theory is outdated, but the sinking of the South Korean ship by torpedo killing 46, has refocused attention on the radical and crazy dictator, Kim Jong-il. North Korea is a homogenous nation of people who fulfill the Confucian view to the max of "Ruler over Subject".

What is the answer? There is no answer. It has to be a Korean problem, however. Not ours.

For years, the American presence in South Korea has been somewhat contentious. Students have wanted us out. Various ruling elements have not been friendly. And, in typical American fashion, we've saved the country. But a generation doesn't even know their lives are better because of our sacrifices.

This may sound like some arrogant American but if Kim Jong-il orders an invasion, it won't be vintage Korean War, it will be an annihilation. If Kim Jong- ill declares war, there is one choice: Nuke 'em. A Far out scenario? Don't count on it.
