I knew this was an unbelievably difficult time for soldiers. I had pretty much finished my tour and was soon to go home. Here this young trooper was just beginning his during the hardest time in Vietnam-the fighting and surviving was tough. Knowing this, I realized I had to be soothing to fire these guys up.
What to do?
Milling around, I hit on music and heard this song by Roger Miller called, "You Can't Rollerskate In A Buffalo Herd." It was great. I made up a skit. As I was talking and telling them that they were all going to make it, I would stop and say listen to this: I had these large loud speakers and they would blast out the song for miles. The guys would like a little puzzled at first, but they soon got fired up.
The local commander tried to get me to quit using the song as he said, It disturbed people and I remember telling him, "Oh yeah, it disturbs people so they might quit fighting, right?" Looking back, this was such a fond and humorous memory in such a difficult time.
